The 2019 U.S. Growth Checklist

The downturn that ended 2018 carried into the new year, with many market observers suggesting that future U.S. growth may be in jeopardy. Conning understands the concerns but sees data supporting continued U.S. growth, albeit at a lower rate than the previous two years.

Much attention has been focused on the yield curve, as inverted yield curves – when shorter-term yields become greater than longer-term yields – have historically been harbingers for subsequent U.S. recessions. While flatter yield curves bear watching, not all yield curves have inverted. In fact, investors may be more concerned about lower inflation expectations than a recession.

A number of conditions remain in place to support growth:
  • The pro-growth economic and fiscal polies in place are not easily undone
  • U.S. data remains strong as global growth appears to desynchronize
  • Divided government historically has generally been a positive for the U.S. economy.

However, Conning does see events that need to be watched for their potential impact on the economy. Please fill out the form to download the commentary and learn more about Conning’s outlook.
